| What is a legislator? Part advocate, customer service clerk, diplomat and research analyst. Part problem solver, debater, and lawmaker. Legislators are a representative for the people of their district in our state government. Sworn to uphold the state and federal Constitutions, they are the people's voice, and watchdog on the workings of our state government and of how their hard earned tax dollars are spent. In addition, they represent the interests of the local governments in their district. Sometimes a problem can only be solved by legislation. When that occurs the legislator researches the issue and develops a bill. They work with other legislators to pass their legislation. They also study other bills to ensure that the Constitution is upheld and that their constituent's interests are protected. Long hours and active participation in the process is essential to presenting and protecting the views of the residents in their district. Legislators come from different cities and counties in service to their fellow Tennesseans. |
