Activities at the Capitol

 

Attend Legislative Session in the House.  You and your students can sit in the *public gallery and observe actual bills being debated and voted upon.  The House meets for Legislative Session every Monday at 5 pm, **Wednesday at 2 pm, Thursday 9 am between January and May.

* Public Galleries: On Legislative Session days, visitors may view the Senate and the House of Representatives from their respective galleries. The galleries can be accessed by using the stairwells located on the Second Floor of the Capitol.

Page during Legislative Session. If you are a small group (10 or less) your young people can page on the House floor for Rep. Lynn during Session.  A page assists the House members with items they may need at their desks.  Your young people will be given a certificate thanking them for their service signed by Rep. Lynn and the Speaker of the House.  Recommended for ages 7 yrs – high school.

 

Attend Committee Meetings. Your group may want to attend various committee meetings or subcommittees where bills are debated and voted upon.  A list of committees and meeting times can be found at; http://www.legislature.state.tn.us/; Click on House; Click on Schedules.

 

Tour the Capitol.  The Tennessee State Capitol building is rich in history and is the oldest state capitol building still in use today for legislative and executive purposes.  Tour is approximately 1 hour.

 

Lunch downtown.  Brown bag your lunch and sit outside on Legislative Plaza or in one of the local parks.  There are many fine and inexpensive restaurants located within walking distance of the Capitol where you can enjoy lunch with your group. They include: Subway, Quizno’s, The Spaghetti Factory, Demo’s and the historic Arcade.  The Hard Rock Café is the only local restaurant that will take a group reservation.  Several restaurants will deliver. Information is at the end of this document.

 

Tennessee State Museum & Military Museum.  The State Capitol includes two wonderful museums for public enjoyment. 

 

Bicentennial Park. Walk to Bicentennial Park from the Capitol.  Enjoy the enormous map of Tennessee, fountains and the caboose.

 

Official Photo. Your group can have a photo taken with Rep. Lynn and the Governor (Governor’s schedule permitting.)  Rep. Lynn will sign the

photo and send it to your school. (Additional copies may be obtained.)
